The Safety in Ergonomic Chairs - A Safer Way to Transfer For the Big and Tall People

Most people never think about safety, when sitting in an ergonomic chair. However, safety is an important area to consider, because of the risks inherent in movement. If you're moving incorrectly, this may cause an injury to your skeletal joints, or the ergonomic chair itself may not be safe for movement.

The most important safety issue to remember, when sitting in an ergonomic chair; is the chair is never secure on the floor. The chair is fitted with casters, which means the chair will roll, when transferring out of the chair. There is a danger of falls without locking castors, when getting out of an ergonomic chair.

Locking castors are available on my website for all chairs, which will be discussed in another article. The ergonomic chair is not only unsafe, because of casters that don't lock; but the seat can also move with a swivel device. This presents another danger, as there needs to be a locking device for securing the seat, before transferring out of the chair.

Most people use the chair armrests for getting out of the ergonomic chair. The danger here is that the chair will move backwards and you will end up on the floor, without locking castors. If you are in the category of Big or Tall, then you are going to be in even more trouble trying to get up from the floor.
There is a safer way to get off the floor by yourself, but you need to be aware of the safety issues, before purchasing an ergonomic chair.

To get up out of an ergonomic chair, without using the armrests is better; because it will encourage safer movements, increase your balance mechanism and help increase your tolerance for easier movements in your body:

• You first need to come forward towards the front of the seat, by moving each pelvic bone forward, until you are near the front of your seat. Make sure that your feet are firmly placed on the floor, back behind the position of your knees. If you can raise your seat higher even better, for ease of getting out.

• Now lean forward from the hips and clasp both hands in front of you, stretching them out.

Your body weight should now be forward, so that as you continue to lean forward more, your buttocks will rise out of the seat and you can straighten your legs, until you are in a standing position.

• If you are still having difficulty getting out of the chair, using with this method. Try using a rocking action that will roll your body forward, until you are able to stand up out of the chair. It will take a lot of patience and work, but you need to be able to do this in other transfer activities such as getting out of bed and off the toilet. So do try practicing this, as it will help your movements become easier.

Transferring safely from an ergonomic chair is an important concern for safe functional transfer activity. This is because the ergonomic chair is not stable, due to the casters fitted to the chair and also the swivel action of the seat, makes for unsafe sitting stability.

Learning to stand independently of the chair is important without using the armrests, particularly when you are in the Big and Tall category; because you have the potential to fall by putting too much weight on the armrests for safe transfers. Transferring out from an ergonomic chair should be a dynamic transfer movement to improve your overall balance mechanism; which will facilitate further active movements in your body which will respond to in a purposeful manner.

Safety is an important issue to consider in an ergonomic chair, when movement occurs in performing productive activities. If the chair has moving part, without locking mechanism there are potential danger in falls or other injuries.

How to Choose a Desk Chair For Your Office

There are a large variety of desk chairs out there in all different colors, sizes, upholstery options, and adjustments; but how do you know which one will work best for your office space? A good desk chair, whether it is for your desk at your work office or home office, will provide you with enough support to keep you comfortable throughout your sitting duration. With good support comes less back, neck, and muscle pain that can occur from poorly designed office chairs. While some desk chairs are specifically designed to eliminate pre-existing health issues such as lower back pain, other desk chairs are made to match other office furniture. For example if you have a desk in a mahogany finish, some may want to find a wooden desk chair with a mahogany finished frame to match their desk. Whether you spend much of your day sitting in your desk chair or if your desk chair is more for show, there are certain guidelines that should be followed when choosing a desk chair.

Another important option that must be taken into account when choosing a desk chair is making sure to select a chair that will fit properly underneath your desk. You should also know the height of your desk and how much clearance is needed for you to be sitting comfortably underneath your desk. Personal preferences will vary between individuals, some opt for leather because it has more of a prestigious look to it while others may opt for mesh to keep cool all throughout the year. This decision is ultimately up to you and what you think will be most comfortable for your desk. Some chairs even come in a combination of different upholsteries if you find it difficult to select only one. If you want to match the desk chair to a certain room, choose a color that matches the room.

Comparing Office Chair Casters With Standard Furniture Casters

The main difference between office chair casters and standard furniture casters, is that the office chairs normally have dual wheels on a single caster where the standard one has a single wheel. This allows easier movement over both carpeted and bare floors for the chairs. The single wheel ones tend to press in to a carpet and not roll as smoothly.

The standard caster and office chair one are both built with ball bearing at the axle, making them move easily over hard surfaces. The standard casters for heavier furniture, such as carts and larger pieces, mainly have a hard rubber wheel to handle any excess weight and long use. An office chair rarely moves any great distance with any real amount of weight on it.

Office Chair Casters

The stationary caster differs with all others in that it is made with a flat bottom. This allows it to keep whatever piece of furniture it is attached to in one place while still allowing it to be moved quite easily to be cleaned behind and then slid back in place. These are very advantageous when the furniture is in a high dust or dirt area.

Cart casters differ greatly from office chair casters in that their wheels tend to be almost three times as big. These are designed specifically to handle heavy weight over a lot of moving around. Each cart is normally equipped with at least one or two casters with a locking mechanism to prevent unwanted movement.

The office chair caster tends to move much quieter than some cart wheels also. This allows for close proximity work and not to disturb others. If your chair moves around too much though, you may want to switch to a stationary style caster.

Choose your caster carefully, whether it is for your cart, cabinet or office chair. Make sure that it is rated for whatever weight you will be putting on it. A caster that is too light for the use being placed on it will break in a very short period of time.
